Mongolian telecommunications market liberalization and privatization started in 1990-s and successfully led to its steady progress and development. The government sought to correlate total economic boost with telecom sector, and made its best to establish competition and healthy atmosphere in the industry. The first step was partial privatization of originally governmental monopoly Mongolia Telecom, followed by introduction of independent regulatory body to help maintain reasonable distribution of market forces. Still, significant progress is seen mostly in mobile sector, which is characterized by more than 100% increase in subscriber base and almost 10 times increase in penetration. Technologies implemented in mobile sector are both CDMA and GSM, with some of them popular in city areas and others prevailing in rural ones. Mongolian government has also succeeded in introducing mobile technologies far away from city civilization, for which purpose it has given a license to G-Mobile. Among mobile operators the first one introduced was MobiCom. The fixed-line sector, though not being as progressive, as mobile industry, has also seen some development since Mongolia Telecom was privatized. Competition here is as healthy as in other spheres of telecom market, namely, international and domestic calls, and even VoIP.

The leading forces in the mobile market are distributed among MobiCom, Unitel, Skytel and G-Mobile. MobiCom is the first player in the mobile industry, accounting for the largest market share and having over 950,000 subscribers in its disposition. The company is also remarkable for introducing the next generation technologies into the industry. The last one, provided by Ericsson, is HSPA/WCDMA data transfer technology, known as the first mobile broadband service in Mongolia. MobiCom is followed by Unitel, accounting for nearly 320,000 subscribers, and Skytel, responsible for serving over 230,000 users. The last place is taken by newly introduced G-Mobile, which has counted nearly 85,000 subscribers since 2007. As for Internet access, there are several Internet service providers in the country. The first place is taken by the oldest of all Internet companies, MagicNet, American company which was a pioneer ISP in Mongolia. Even now it accounts for the largest share in the sector. Then comes Mobinet, offering its services since 2001; and only third place is taken by Micom, Mongolia Telecom subsidiary. Other ISPs are Sky C&C, Bodicom, Railcom, MCSCom and some other. The current tendency in Internet market is towards broadband technology, though only several years ago it was dominated by dial-up.
